Youth-led Futures Design

How can we design futures by and for young people?

UNICEF, supported by UNGP Finland

What

UNICEF Youth Foresight Fellows engaged youth in a foresight process to inform UNICEF’s Global Outlook, an annual analysis of potential impacts on children’s wellbeing and rights across the globe. Learnings from the workshops and their own journeys in foresight are captured in ‘Our Future Pledge: An Agenda for Futures by Youth,’ a resource pack and social media campaign empowering young readers to shape their future. A separate playbook contains the tools, approaches and good practices for working closely with young people to make foresight more accessible to youth.

Why

Youth foresight aims to empower young people to shape their future and express their ideas. UNICEF is leading the shift towards more robust intergenerational dialogues around foresight, letting youth steer consultation processes and inspiring meaningful engagement.

Key lessons

  • Engaging young people in designing their futures is an essential step towards intergenerational equity.
  • Foresight can be applied in different contexts and with a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds, ages, and cultures.
  • Young people can be equal partners in undertaking and guiding foresight projects.
